Often it's not until I'm near the end of the track that I make changes to the default at all, because the 70s setting at 4 seconds sounds great on most synth stuff, unless I want a more modern, or specifically 80s sound. Although honestly I like the sound of the valhalla stuff so much I just tend to start with it, and only move to something else if I feel compelled to. For shorter reverbs there are probably better options, and if you really want a "retro" sound nothing will come close to "real" hardware units like the SPX-90, Midiverb, Lexicon stuff, etc. I suppose it depends on what your looking for, there are cases where impulse responses do a better job, but for the end of chain reverb, I find that Valhalla sounds great on nearly anything that needs a fairly long reverb.
